LOUISVILLE, Ky. — For the sixth consecutive year, employees and family members from LG&E and Kentucky Utilities will come together to donate their time on Sat., June 19, from 8:30 a.m. to noon during their annual "Day of Caring" event. Volunteers will be cleaning up litter and debris along the Ohio River banks in Louisville, Carroll County and Mercer County.
The Day of Caring will coincide with this year's annual River Sweep to help make the largest community impact and environmental improvements throughout the company's service territories during a one-day event. Nearly 270 volunteers will assist in this year's effort.
"Community service and volunteerism are an important part of our employee-giving campaign, and seeing our employees and families come together for events such as Day of Caring increases our employee morale," said John P. Malloy, Vice President of Energy Delivery and Retail Business. "Combining our Day of Caring efforts with River Sweep will help maximize our impact in giving back to our communities because volunteers are cleaning up the river banks, making environmental improvements and creating safer, healthier areas along the river."
Additionally, volunteers will clean up The Arboretum in Lexington, Ky., and will work with Habitat for Humanity and Kosair Kids Center in Louisville as part of this year's Day of Caring. In the five years since its inception, volunteers have contributed nearly 5,700 hours toward various improvement activities for organizations such as the Boy Scouts, Wildlife Education Centers and Kentucky State Parks.
The Day of Caring is the pinnacle event of LG&E's and KU's annual Power of One Campaign that began in 2005. Raising nearly eight million dollars in the last five years, the Power of One Campaign is an annual employee giving program that supports nonprofit organizations throughout the LG&E and KU service territories.
Employees also have a chance to impact their local communities through financial contributions to the employee giving campaign as part of the Power of One Campaign, as well as by participating in fundraising events throughout the year.
