Company assembling and distributing bags of supplies for students in need

(LOUISVILLE, Ky.) – Even in the wake of the ongoing pandemic, come August, students across Kentucky will begin a new school year and formal instruction. Whether in a traditional classroom setting or participating virtually through non-traditional instruction, students still need supplies, resources and the necessary tools to succeed. That’s why LG&E and KU are once again mobilizing the utilities’ annual School Supply Drive.

Employee volunteers are assembling and distributing 3,000 reusable bags filled with school supplies. Items provided include notebooks, pens, pencils, markers, sanitizer, tissue packets and a package of colored pencils. The bags will be distributed across the utilities’ service area and made available through LG&E’s longtime School Supply Drive partners – The Lord’s Kitchen and Feed the City – as well as more than a dozen school resource centers and community service organizations in Jefferson County and surrounding areas.

While the amount of supplies provided haven’t changed, the way the effort is put together looks a bit different this year, due to COVID-19.

“Providing needed school supplies for students across the communities we serve is something we felt was critical to continue, but we knew we had to modify the way we did it so everyone is as safe as possible,” said Angie Evans, LG&E and KU vice president of Corporate Responsibility and Community Affairs. “Instead of dozens of employees, family and friends helping put bags together, we kept it to less than 10 employees, who followed state and federal COVID-19 guidelines while assembling the materials.”

JCPS resource centers and various community organizations receiving the supplies plan to distribute them based on need. Meanwhile, The Lord’s Kitchen and Feed the City will be making supplies available through their own coordinated school supply distribution efforts.
