Customer examples

From making nominal voluntary contributions through the Green Energy Program, partnering with us through our available solar programs, or becoming a renewable generator, LG&E and KU offers a variety of topics relevant to customers interested in renewables.

Customers who seek more energy independence from the electric grid, there are two options to consider: Net Zero and complete grid independence, also known as, “going off grid.”

The examples below help compare the needs of a customer using electric and natural gas service and a customer using all electric service. These examples are based on the actual usage of a typical customer, along with the renewable energy system technology that is currently available.

Typical residential customer: electric and natural gas service

  Net zero Off grid
PV solar system size 5 kW to 10 kW 30 kW to 60 kW
Backup power supply Electric grid 50 kWh to 150 kWh
of batteries
Space requirements 500 to 1,000
square feet
2,000 to 5,000
square feet
Estimated system costs $10,000 to $30,000 $100,000 to $200,000

Typical residential customer: electric service only

  Net zero Off grid
PV solar system size 10 kW to 20 kW 80 kW to 150 kW
Backup power supply Electric grid 150 kWh to 200 kWh
of batteries
Space requirements 500 to 1,500
square feet
5,000 to 15,000
square feet
Estimated system costs $20,000 to $40,000 $200,000 to $400,000
