Don’t mess around with flammable liquids. Make sure they’re stored safely

Just about all of us have some flammable liquids in or around our homes, whether that’s gas for the lawn mower, paint thinner, solvents or other dangerous liquids. The important thing to remember is to keep them stored properly and safely. Failure to do so could lead to a serious injury or even death. When it comes to flammable liquids, just a few simple storage rules will help keep you and your family safe.

  • Store them in the proper container – Use only approved safety cans. Never store a flammable liquid in a milk jug or other inappropriate container. All containers and cabinets where they are stored should always be properly labeled with the flammable liquids signage.
  • Protect the main part of your home – It’s better to keep flammable liquids in the garage, basement or a storage shed.
  • Keep them away from children – Make sure wherever you store your flammable liquids, they are not within reach of children.
  • Practice safety around certain plumbing fixtures and appliances – Burners and pilot lights must be installed at least 18 inches off the ground. Vapors from flammable liquids could travel across the floor and ignite.
