Friends of falcons find themselves flocking to our web cam

Our popular falcon cam is back for another spring! The web camera – which made its debut in 2013 – is in a falcon nest box at LG&E and KU’s Mill Creek Generating Station in Louisville, Ky. In partnership with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, the web cam gives people an opportunity to follow the lives of the birds from eggs until they are ready to fly on their own.

Last year the Mill Creek nesting box produced two falcon chicks. It is one of four falcon nesting boxes at company facilities. The others are at the E.W. Brown, Ghent and Trimble County generating stations. In all, our nesting boxes produced 10 falcons last year. Employees at each of the plants volunteer to help maintain the nesting boxes.

The nesting boxes give peregrine falcons a safe place to nest, helping to increase the population of this majestic bird, which saw a major decline in numbers in the mid-1900s.
