Too hot to handle: Keep water temperatures safe

Everyone enjoys a warm bath or shower, especially during winter. And hot water makes cleaning dishes a breeze. But when water temperatures get too hot, serious burn injuries can result in an instant. Check out these simple ways you can help protect your family from getting burned by hot water.

  • Always turn cold water on before hot water and turn off hot water before cold water.
  • Keep children out of the tub until you’ve checked the water temperature with your own hand.
  • Regularly check the temperature setting on your water heater. Avoid setting it higher than 120 degrees. (At 125 degrees, a child’s skin will be burned within three seconds.)
  • To prevent water temperatures from rising above 120 degrees, consider installing anti-scald devices on showers and faucets.
  • Ensure all faucets are correctly labeled HOT and COLD.
