When snow or ice hits, warm up to these winter safety tips

With winter in full swing, the possibility for snow and ice looms. And that could mean potential power outages, too. Staying prepared in the event you lose power is even more important as winter’s chill bears down. These simple tips can help keep you safe this season.

  • Always have a simple emergency kit packed. Minimum items should include a flashlight, a battery-operated radio, extra batteries and basic first-aid supplies, plus any prescription medication. A battery- operated lantern is also a good item to have ready.
  • Ensure portable cell phone chargers are charged up and ready for use.
  • Have a supply of nonperishable food on standby. Think items such as canned goods, bagged snacks, etc. (And don’t forget the manual can opener!) Help preserve perishable food by opening the refrigerator and freezer doors as little as possible.

To report or get updates on power outages, remember to download our free mobile app. Find it by searching “LG&E KU ODP” in app stores. Outages may also be reported by text at 4LGEKU (454358), while updates can be received by texting STATUS (782887). Also be sure your cell number is up to date in your online account (My Account).

As always, if you see a downed power line, do not go near it. Report it immediately by calling our automated phone line. LG&E customers call 502-589-1444 or 800-331-7370 (press 1-1-2). KU and ODP customers call 800-981-0600 (press 1-1).
